Magicka: Wizard Wars

PUBLISHER: Paradox | DEVELOPER: Paradox North | GENRE: MOBA
THEME: Fantasy | PLATFORM: Download | STATUS: Shutdown Jul 2016

Magicka: Wizard Wars is a free-to-play (and fun-to-play, as the developers call it) team-based action PvP game that has all the features to be considered a MOBA, although the studio is trying to avoid this very popular – and prone to heated discussion – label. But this game has an identity of its own, thanks to the original indie hit, a fantastic and funny little surprise that had a few tricks up its wizard sleeve.

Magicka: Wizard Wars pits two teams of four wizards each in some very chaotic battles, with the dynamic spellcasting system of the original game returning for some crazy on the fly combinations. Combining the several elements results in very different spells that will be used to set the enemies on fire, freeze them or to create a succession of effects that are as much devastating as they are funny to watch.

Friendly fire is also part of the battles, with the accidental – and then again, sometimes not quite that accidental – killing of your friends being a reason for a lot of laughs and sometimes quite a bit of comprehensible frustration. You can also customize your wizard with hundreds of items.

Magicka: Wizard Wars is an accomplished and very funny free MOBA game (or action PvP game, if you wish) that is the more delightful thanks to the original spell system.
