It figures – PUBG Corp is suing Epic Games over Fortnite Battle Royale

PlayerUnknown's developer PUBG Corp is suing Epic Games over similarities between PUBG and Fortnite Battle Royale. No, really, what did you expect after this rant in September 2017 with things like “contemplating further action”?

Korean Times is reporting that PUBG Corp filed an injunction, alleging copyright infringement, with the Seoul Central District Court against Epic Games Korea. The suit was actually filed in January, but we're only hearing about this now. Perhaps it's because everyone was busy with this PUBG Corp lawsuit against NetEase's Knives Out and Rules of Survival, once again due to the apparent “inspiration” on PUBG… or maybe the concept already exists for decades and it's only because of the massive popularity boost that it got recently.

PUBG Corp is also displeased with the fact that PUBG is based on the Unreal Engine, and feared that Epic Games could take advantage of this to benefit Fortnite, now an obvious competitor in the genre.

Epic Games is preparing to release Fortnite Battle Royale in cybercafes around Korea during the second quarter of 2018, in a partnership with Neowiz Games, which could further expand the grasp of this free survival game and diminish PUBG's appeal in Korea.

As far as similarities between PUBG and Fortnite Battle Royale go, this case seems to be as strong as an hypothetical FIFA versus PES lawsuit (“Hey, I invented corner kicks, how dare you copy that”). However, let's see what the courts have to say about this.
