Without much fanfare – or any, for that matter – Richard “Lord British” Garriott's Ultima Online spiritual successor Shroud of the Avatar has just officially switched to free-to-play.
Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues is developed by Portalarium, which includes Lord British, creator of the Ultima series as well as Starr Long, director of Ultima Online. With such a reputable cast, it would be expected that this fantasy MMORPG would be a success. However, after a very successful Kickstarter campaign and several years in Early Access, it has failed to convince players, or even backers.
Shroud of the Avatar looks dated and feels unfinished, never managing to secure a decent player base through the years – the average player count was never that much above a couple of hundred players. Maybe the game will get a second chance now that it is free-to-play, or could it turn out to be the beginning of the end for Lord British's new venture?
