Fallout 76 isn’t going free-to-play, Bethesda says to rumor

A rumor has recently emerged that Fallout 76 could be going free-to-play soon. After a controversial launch in November 2018, even by Bethesda's usually ‘buggy but awesome' standards, Fallout 76 is by far one of the least appreciated chapters in the acclaimed series.

The rumor sparked from a video that discussed how Australian EB Games was showing limited stock and big sales on Fallout 76, as well as anonymous tips pointing to physical copies being pulled from the shelves. This naturally led to speculation about a business model switch, something that isn't uncommon for Bethesda in Australia, if you recall the Elder Scrolls Online drama.

Bethesda may be indeed working on something behind the curtains, but for now they strictly denied that Fallout 76 is going free-to-play: “there is no truth to this rumor”, they said on Twitter.

I also find it a bit soon to make such a drastic change. Fallout 76 needs to be further improved to calm down all the rage coming from players who felt cheated by its bugs and varied problems. Ignoring the $60 price tag and going for free-to-play would only stir the post-apocalyptic pot.

Fallout 76 may go free-to-play in the future, but this is a rumor that needed to be shot down for now.
