Speculation about The Sims 5 is rampant for a while, as the community wants to learn where the series is going next. Apparently, there's a push for a The Sims 5 online focus, as the next game tries to channel several features from the innovative but ill-fated The Sims Online.
The Sims 4 was released in 2014 and after a shaky start, it slowly gained the hearts of the community. It has over 20 million lifetime players across all platforms and is the longest-running game in the franchise, so it's only natural that EA is already working on The Sims 5.
Don't Miss: Blue Protocol English localization revealed by new job offer
Speaking with Sims Community (via PCGamer), EA's CEO Andrew Wilson finally shared some The Sims 5 news with the world. When asked about the possibility of taking another shot at a new The Sims Online game, Wilson replied that many of the social interactions and competitive aspects of that game will be present in the series for years to come:
“As Maxis continues to think about The Sims for a new generation – cross-platforms and a cloud of a neighborhood world, you should imagine while we will always stay true to our inspiration, escape, creation, self-improvement, motivations – that this notion of social interactions and competition like the kind of things that were actually present in The Sims Online many many years ago – that they will start to become a part of The Sims experience in the years to come.”
Considering that in August 2019 Maxis posted a job offer asking for a Creative Director with “experience in designing a game with a long-term live service,” perhaps we should really look forward to a The Sims 5 Online. It's too early to say if the game will ditch the single-player aspect entirely – something that sounds unlikely – and become a fully-fledged The Sims 5 MMO, but we should learn more about it during 2020.
