Daybreak is sitting on a couple of extremely appetizing franchises that many studios would kill for. EverQuest is the long-running MMORPG IP that inspired World of Warcraft, but the EverQuest Next follow-up was sadly canceled due to a very troubled development and unmeasured ambition. On the other hand, PlanetSide is a sci-fi epic that had a troublesome misfire in the recent PlanetSide Arena. While PlanetSide 2 is still running since 2012, it's not the same sprawling battlefield that it once was, so naturally it's time to start thinking about PlanetSide 3. Has Daybreak talked about the PlanetSide 3 release date and plans for its core gameplay?
PlanetSide 3 reveal | Is PlanetSide 3 in development?
PlanetSide 3 is in development indeed. It has officially been confirmed by Daybreak in October 2019, with some info that was somewhat buried within a PlanetSide 2 producer's letter. The first official PlanetSide 3 info ever to be publicly revealed, it mentioned that “PlanetSide Arena is intended to be the stepping stone to PlanetSide 3.” Probably not what fans of the series wanted to hear, but let's go with it.
The rest of the info is more exciting, as the team reveals its plan of expanding from the battlefields of Auraxis into a full-fledged galactic war. Exploration, colonization, and conquering are activities that you can partake, with new features and gameplay styles being worked on.
In January 2020, more PlanetSide 3 news surfaced, although it wasn't anything substantially tied to the core of the game. A new producer's letter shared the info that Daybreak was splitting into a few studios, with Rogue Planet Games handling everything related to PlanetSide 3 and PlanetSide 2.
Is a PlanetSide 3 Release Date Announced?
Taking into account the timing of the PlanetSide 3 reveal, it's fair to say that the game is in its early design stages. With work on PlanetSide Arena ending not long ago, Rogue Planet is probably prototyping and testing gameplay features for PlanetSide 3.
While it's impossible to pinpoint a time frame for the PlanetSide 3 release, we can always guess that we won't be seeing it before 2022. Considering the vast scope of galactical battles that would probably be similar to EVE Online and all the mechanics that this enthralls, there is an impressive amount of work in store for the devs. Let's just hope the outcome is brighter than the one of EverQuest Next.
