If you thought that picking up a game and sticking to it is a complicated task, things are about to become even more complicated. Psyonix has announced that a Rocket League free to play switch is coming later this summer, which means that you'll get to enjoy one of the most popular games in the world for absolutely free.
In case you didn't know, Rocket League is a car soccer game that is played by tons of gamers – it is currently sitting as the 11th game with the most current players, according to Steamcharts. It also has very positive rating on Steam, although it is going to leave the Valve store when it makes the switch to the Epic Games Store. Don't worry, you still can play Rocket League using the Steam version, but new players will have to go to the Epic Games Store if they want to download the PC version.
As for the other Rocket League platforms, they're all going free-to-play as well. PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch will all be free, and there's full cross-platform support as well. Cross-platform progression is another feature that is coming with the summer 2020 update.
If you have purchased Rocket League before the free-to-play switch, you get the Faded Cosmos Boost«, Legacy status, all past Rocket League-branded DLCs if you don't already own them, and 200+ “Common” items will be upgraded to “Legacy” quality. There's a nice FAQ that should clear all your doubts about this transition, but as it always happens when a game switches from buy-to-play to free-to-play, some player outrage is bound to happen.
Contrary to most situations, the Rocket League free to play switch isn't due to a diminishing player base; instead, it feels like the right time for Psyonix to give the game a broader appeal, while hopefully remaining fair to those that have purchased it prior. If my memory isn't failing me, the devs had some doubts regarding the original release's business model, and while their decision was incredibly successful, they are now opening up Rocket League to the rest of the world.
