Travian is a classic text-based free-to-play MMORPG that runs in your browser. Those looking for great graphics won’t stay in the game for long, unless they decide to give it a chance and let the imagination help with the basic visuals.

The player has to choose one of the available tribes, each one with their specific strengths and weaknesses and try to develop their village. It’s a slow city-building game, requiring quite some time and attention from the players, although you may give some orders (build a windmill or something like that) and leave the game. When you return it will most likely already be constructed and working. However, Travian is a game for those who like to constantly survey everything in the village, choosing the best buildings to turn your tribe into the most powerful one.

Travian has quite a reputation going for it but times are changing. There are many free-to-play games using similar mechanics and offering quite a few different settings (Caesary, Grepolis…), so it’s a question of choosing the most appealing theme. Either way, be prepared to spend a lot of time if you’re up to the challenge.
