Icarus is the new game from Dean Hall, the mind behind DayZ. Developed in a partnership with RocketWerkz, it tries to set a new standard for the popular survival genre. Surprisingly, an Icarus free-to-play business model was announced alongside the game's reveal, because Dean wants that the game is available to the highest possible number of players.

Icarus is a free-to-play sci-fi survival cooperative game powered by Unreal Engine 4 where you and your friends explore, survive, and try to make a fortune in an alien world ripe for the taking. However, this world has many unforeseen dangers and you'll have to deal with the alien wildlife, harsh environments, and unexpected hazards.

You start by scavenging for materials and exploring the locations, so that you can progress to bigger and more dangerous adventures. Game sessions start small and grow larger as you advance your tech, craft superior gear, and build a shelter that is strong enough to support your needs. Between each drop, which can go from 30 minutes up to several days, you can return to orbit alone or with your teammates to safely craft and plan your next strategies. Will you build a bridge and fly back to orbit before returning with your friends to tackle the next region? The persistent structure of Icarus means that you should always consider your next steps.

The aforementioned housing system will provide you with a respite from the harsh environment, but you can also use vehicles to roam the land and explore distant locations. Surviving isn't an easy task and you must keep a watchful eye over your stats, including oxigen, food, and water.

The Icarus game download will be available in 2021 and the free-to-play monetization system will surely bring many prospectors into this dangerous but exciting new world.
