Is Phantasy Star Online 2 PS4 Releasing in North America and Europe?

2020 is going to be the year of Phantasy Star Online 2, as Microsoft and Sega bring this anime MMORPG to North America. It should also hit the European regions sometime later, although Sega is keeping quiet about it – it would be surprising in a very negative way if PSO2 never saw a release in Europe. After so many years and with the English translation obstacle surpassed, only some weird deals would prevent an European release. But that's another matter entirely concerning the initial Xbox One and PC versions, which leads us to another question: Is Phantasy Star Online 2 PS4 releasing in the west as well?

A quick search reveals the target Phantasy Star Online 2 platforms. PSO2 released in PC (2012), PS Vita (2013), PS4 (2016), and Nintendo Switch (2018), with the latest version launching for Xbox One in 2020. A spin-off called Phantasy Star Online 2es was also developed for Android and iOS in 2014.

With Microsoft backing the deal, it's understandable that Phantasy Star Online 2 is only being advertised as an Xbox One and Windows 10 PC release. After all, the giant publisher saw an opening to get an exclusive MMORPG for its console and jumped on the opportunity. Despite the several years that passed since its original Japanese release, Phantasy Star Online 2 is widely regarded as a good game and a great example of action combat in an MMORPG.

But does this mean that the other platforms will be left unattended? What about the Phantasy Star Online 2 PS4 and Switch versions, isn't anyone going to bring those to the west?

In all likeliness, PS4 and Switch players will also be a part of the ARKS military force. The Microsoft deal has all the makings of a timed exclusive, with President of Xbox Phil Spencer saying that the game “will end up on all platforms.” That comment leaves no margin for error, so unless something happened in the meantime that made Sega back up from any potential deals with a publisher for the PS4 and Switch versions – in case it isn't self-publishing -, 2021 should see the release of Phantasy Star Online 2 Switch and PS4 versions.
