When is Among Us 2 Coming Out?

Among Us was the subject of a massive popularity boost in August 2020, turning a low profile game into a worldwide phenomenon. This caught developer Innersloth by surprise, something that is understandable due to the somewhat tame expectations for a game released in 2018. In other hands, the huge success would undoubtedly lead to an Among Us sequel, spin-off, or even dreadful yearly releases, but Innersloth has other things in mind. When is Among Us 2 coming out, if that's going to happen at all?

Is Among Us 2 in Development?

By August 2020, Innersloth revealed its plans to develop Among Us 2, mainly so that they could create a game that would withstand growth, something that isn't the case with the original. So, while the tiny local-multiplayer-only title has grown into worldwide party game success that we all know and love, there is only so much that can be done.

That is why Among Us 2 is in production… or at least it was. Innersloth decided to cancel development on Among Us 2 by September 23 and to focus on expanding the first game. Here is what they had to say:

“The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1.”

This means that you shouldn't expect an Among Us 2 download anytime soon, because all the efforts of the studio will be put on Among Us 1. This include reworking several parts of the code so that it can support additions and improvements that weren't originally planned, such as a much requested friends and account system, a new map, colorblind support, and fixing server issues, hacks included.

What is the Among Us 2 Release Date?

As you may have guessed by now, Among Us 2 isn't in development anymore. However, this doesn't mean that the team won't grow larger and eventually decide to tackle that challenge in the coming years. For now, Among Us 1 is a big game and the only one that you should consider.

But we can speculate on what Innersloth had initially planned for the Among Us 2 release. Their calculations for the first game were as follows: “Among Us took about 6 months to enter open beta (early access) and 6 more months to leave open beta. Among Us 2 will probably take at least as long to enter open beta, and will probably spend longer there.”

Considering August 2020 as the date when development took off, this means that Among Us 2 would probably enter open beta by March 2021, and eventually release by the end of 2021.
