There's a Titanfall spin-off in the works and this is quite a surprising one – called Apex Legends, this is a free-to-play Hero Battle Royale for PC, PS4 and Xbox One that will be available this Monday, February 4. For a game that no one has ever heard anything about before, this is rather unusual.
eSports journalist Rod Breslau revealed the game on Twitter, adding that it will feature classes or heroes with unique abilities (no titan mech suits, apparently), up to 60 players per match and you can play solo or in a maximum of three players per team (trios). Apex Legends runs on a modified version of Valve's Source Engine, just as Titanfall and Titanfall 2.
Breslau notes that Apex Legends will include the mandatory micro-transactions and lootboxes. However, the approach is said to be very similar to Blizzard's Overwatch.
Respawn Entertainment is the developer of the Titanfall series and develops Apex Legends as well. There is no way of knowing so far if Titanfall 3 evolved into Apex Legends or if Respawn decided to release this to be able to spend extra developing Titanfall 3.
Of course, these are just rumors, albeit very solid ones – Electronic Arts and Respawn held an event this week to show the game to YouTubers and Streamers, according to Kotaku. So, it's real, it's free-to-play and it's coming in a couple of days.
