CliffyB on LawBreakers free-to-play: “I wouldn’t remove it from the table”

LawBreakers free-to-play

We swear that we wrote this article without knowing about this Gamespot interview, where Cliff Bleszinski discusses his shooter LawBreakers and what is coming for it.

But Cliff's interview goes along with what we touched upon in our piece. It's a lengthy interview, but there's an important question about LawBreakers going free-to-play:

“[…] Should it have gone free? Maybe. Would we consider experimenting with that in the future? I wouldn't remove it from the table. But, I just … I don't want to get down into sleazy free to play, as much as I want to keep this game afloat and with our, like I said, our fledgling community, I don't want to get into Candy Crush type-tactics 'cause I just won't be able to sleep at night and I don't sleep well to begin with.

But yeah, I wouldn't rule it out in the future, especially if we consider rolling the game out … Well, we're considering in the future, rolling the game out in Asia. It's one of those things that you almost have to do that in Asia, so we'll be considering doing that, maybe one of those things if we do it there, would it make sense to roll it back out to the states? Possibly. But, I don't want to start doing gun rentals any time soon in game.”

It's obvious that LawBreaker's player numbers aren't very comforting, and Boss Key Productions has to do something about it. Releasing a new character is always a good move, but it probably won't be enough. Delaying the switch to free-to-play could turn LawBreakers into another Evolve or Battleborn – shooters that weren't bad, but took so long to make the move to F2P that eventually no one cared that much anymore.

What should they do? Take a good, long look at successful action games such as Warframe and Paladins: Champions of the Realm, and try to go somewhere down that route. Maybe that can save LawBreakers, but it depends on how long Cliff Bleszinski and the team will keep beating a dead horse.

Or would you do something else? Let us know in the comments.
