Uh-oh! Marvel Heroes is going to shut down and there may be something at work that we aren't fully aware of. Disney made the decision, as Kotaku reports, to shut down the game, which originally released on PC in 2013 and was ported to PS4 and Xbox One earlier this year.
Disney, which owns Marvel, said the following:
“We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.”
Fans began to suspect that something was very wrong when Gazzilion went silent and missed four weekly community updates, as well as failing to release any Thor Ragnarok tie-in content. Player numbers from the PC version started to drop recently, but Disney offered no specific reason for the decision to shut down the game altogether.
Some players are saying that it could have something to do with sexual harassment allegations against Gazillion CEO David Dohrmann, and Disney may have wanted to end the agreement in full in light of this. We're just guessing, but it's odd if this actually happened, as a somewhat decent game was completely burned and it could yet be saved with the proper (new) leadership and support.
Of course, we may never know what actually happened. All that we know is that Marvel Heroes is shutting down, but we'll let you know if something else comes up on this matter.
