It's no secret that Epic Games is sitting at the top of the world right now, thanks to the unstoppable success of Fortnite Battle Royale. This game is so massive that it is even cannibalizing other top franchises such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Overwatch. It's not very surprising considering that the player base of these games usually overlap, meaning that a massive increase in one franchise may result in a decrease in other games' population.
According to Bloomberg, Fortnite's success has turned Epic Games' founder Tim Sweeney into a billionaire. Obviously, it should read ‘Fortnite Battle Royale', as releasing the PvP portion of the game for free is what originated the insane amount of revenue – this year only, Fortnite is expected to generate $2 billion in revenue, making Epic Games worth between $5 billion to $8 billion. Very impressive. Of course, the fact that Fortnite Battle Royale is played and streamed by a bunch of personalities including Drake and Ninja plays a significant part in its success.
Ironically enough, Tim Sweeney, 47, is said as not being much of a gamer himself. Considering that his studio was also responsible for the Gears of War series, among other success stories, this may come as a bit of a surprise.
Also available in mobile platforms and with Chinese giant Tencent working on the China Fortnite release, everything is pointing for an even bigger success.
