Only you can answer that question, but we're going to try to help you out with this Genshin Impact tier list guide, which is based in our own experience and the advice of some experts from the community, a.k.a. fans of the game. This includes the closed betas and the Chinese open beta, and while we know that in the meantime some characters may be nerfed or buffed and that future updates may balance the roster in different ways, this tier list should give you great tips to get started.

As you probably know by now – check our Genshin Impact character list to learn more about each one -, characters in this game come with a specific weapon and one of seven elements, also called vision. Amber, for example, uses a bow and is a Pyro character. They are also separated by a star rank, with the official launch only including 4-Star and 5-Star characters. Diluc is a 5-Star hero, while Xiangling is 4-Star, but since most 5-Star characters are only available via gacha, initially your focus should be in creating a strong 4-Star party.

Making a strong and balanced party of four characters is the main goal of every player in Genshin Impact. This way, you will be able to tackle the challenges of the world of Teyvat, including its dungeons (called domains) and the Spiral Abyss.

However, you only unlock a few characters by progressing in the story, such as Amber, Lisa, Kaeya, and Xiangling. Your avatar, the Traveler, who can either be Aether or Lumine depending on your gender choice, also plays the role of one character in the party. Most of the other characters can only be unlocked via gacha pulls, also known as wishes, with a couple of them being purchasable using in-game currency Masterless Starglitter.

Saying that one Genshin Impact character is by far the best of the bunch isn't exactly black and white. There are several factors at play such as constellations, which enhance some skills and give other buffs. A character without any constellation level is far weaker than one with a full level six constellation. Besides, each one is more suited to a specific kind of activity, from open world exploration to domains or the Spiral Abyss.

Finally, it's imperative to note that F2P players will find it very hard to make a strong 5-Star party with full constellation and weapons. The upside is that Genshin Impact doesn't feature any competitive PvP mode – yet? – and so this makes the playing field more leveled between free players and paying players.

In conclusion, while Xiangling rates highly in our Genshin Impact tier list, you'll only realize her full potential when you have several branches of her constellation unlocked. Jean is a reliable support character but only becomes vital after exploring her constellation, same goes for Mona and Barbara. However, it's only after experimenting with the characters that you get a feel for their unique roles and value.

Oh, and Amber is good for setting Hilichurls on fire, but you'll want to replace her as soon as you can with someone like Xiangling, which happens to be unlocked for free right before you travel to Liyue Harbor.
