Who's up for a good conspiracy theory? There are rumors floating around say the popular sandbox game Roblox is shutting down in 2020. Is Roblox shutting down this year as some news seem to indicate? And while we're at it, when is Minecraft shutting down? Let's investigate.
First, let's get some context to these questions. Roblox is a big game… no, scratch, that, Roblox is a huge game. It harbors tons of mini-games and adventures created by the community, featuring a bottomless pit of content that would be lost forever if developer Roblox Corporation decided to close the servers.
Besides, in 2019 it managed to surpass the colossal Minecraft, with over 100 million monthly active users. Sounds like a number that no sane company would want to throw down the drain, unless it has decided to take the money and run, right? These figures are most likely bringing in enough revenue to keep the game's servers running for several years, and to create additional content to keep players busy with their creations.
Is Roblox shutting down in 2020?
The plain truth is that the Roblox shutting down news is just a hoax, and not even a new one. Apparently, this fake news surfaces once in a while, and apparently it only contributes to make Roblox grow even larger. Roblox has debunked the rumor via an official tweet (via PCGamesN).
“Let’s set things straight: Roblox isn’t “shutting down,” the tweet reads. “The same hoax (with a few details changed) goes around every year or two. Remember: don’t believe everything y’all read on the internet!” Wise words that everyone should abide by.
To conclude, when does Roblox end? Not soon, that's for sure. It isn't being sued by Lego, it isn't being purchased by Google, and whatever other Roblox rumors that are doing the rounds – you can keep playing Roblox as you normally would. Apparently, one new game pack that is all the rage is Roblox Ninja Legends, where you can become a fierce ninja.
Besides being a cool playground to let your imagination run wild, Roblox is also a nice tool to learn game design and could even land you a job in the games industry.
When is Minecraft shutting down?
Don't worry, Minecraft shutting down is just another silly rumor in the same vein of the Roblox shutting down news. Mojang is running a highly successful game that remains as one of the biggest in the world, and unless a catastrophe happens, it will remain available until the end of times.
Microsoft bought Minecraft in 2014 for $2.5 billion, enough money to buy a few countries, probably. Since then, it has continued supporting the game and recently releases the augmented reality sandbox game Minecraft Earth.
Is Minecraft shutting down in face of such an unrelenting success? Obviously not, as Helen Z from Mojang has tweeted earlier this month.
“Hey folks, I can confirm that Minecraft servers are NOT shutting down in 2020,” Helen said. “It’s just a stupid hoax. Feel free to pass this along.”
And there you go. Roblox isn't shutting down, and Minecraft isn't shutting down either. Feel free to enjoy those games now or in a few years, because they're not going away anytime soon.
