While the chance of seeing a western release of Phantasy Star Online 2 is only real for someone with half a brain, SEGA decided they should twist the knife a bit more. How? By announcing a new Phantasy Star game to celebrate the series' 30th anniversary.
This could be good, right? Alas, it is not, as said game is destined for mobile platforms and looks like every other generic mobile game. Idola: Phantasy Star Saga is the name of the game and the release is planned for the end of this year in Japan. Idola is the name of the giant monsters that the players will be fighting, in a world divided into Law and Chaos. The two main protagonists are Stella, the leader of the Aries Knights, and while she is quite shy, she goes full bad-ass when she wears her mask. The other protagonist of Idola Phantasy Star Saga is Yuri, who lost his parents at an early age. He eventually meets Stella and joins the Aries Knights. He has a big heart and probably didn't deserve to be in such a game. The combat system should be the standard fare of clicking buttons and waiting for skills to happen.
Some important names are working on this game, including producer Shuntaro Tanaka (Valkyria Chronicles, Sakura Wars, Phantasy Star Online 2), director Tomomasa Chin (Phantasy Star Online 2, Valkyria Chronicles), and art director Sho Mutsuura (Phantasy Star Online 2). With such talent, you would expect a bolder project than Idola Phantasy Star Saga, and judging by the dislikes in the announcement video below, players are not pleased.
Let's give it the benefit of the doubt, right?
