Transformers Universe loses the war, shuts down in January

Jagex doesn't seem to have much luck besides the blockbuster RuneScape, a game that is so successful that is almost becoming a curse to the studio. Not long ago it was the strategy MMO Eight Realms that was quietly canceled and now it's the ambitious but troubled MOBA hybrid (or MOTA) Transformers Universe that is going to shut down on January 31, only about half a year after it entered open beta.

The reason for this decision? Technically is that it “comes at an important time for both companies as they both realign their plans and focuses for 2015”, but as with most F2P games, we have to read between the lines and think that the playerbase and revenue wasn't just good enough. Jagex is giving refunds to those that have purchased a Founders Pack, as well as anyone that has purchased relic bundles and starter packs.

Transformers Universe was initially envisioned as a browser-based MMORPG but development turned into another direction and it ended up as an action game. The idea of a Transformers MMO is an appealing one but also not the easiest prospect, so while much more could be made with the franchise, the Transformers Universe MOTA wasn't exactly a bad game and could be fun for a while. Well, apparently not anymore. Don't lose hope though; NCSoft is working on Project HON, a speedy action game with transforming mechs that looks a lot like what a Transformers game could be.
