French studio Ankama is hard at work on a new MMORPG called Waven. This game was previously known as Dofus Cube, Dofus 3, Krosmoz World or Wakfu Heroes – no, really, we're not kidding – and is destined to PC and mobile devices. Following on the tradition of previous Ankama games, it will be free-to-play.
Waven is set in the Krosmoz universe and you'll easily recognize the studio's accomplished art style. However, in Waven they are going 3D for the environments, a decision that was made taking into consideration combat and the need to up the ante with dynamic shadows, lighting, weather effects and more. The characters seem to remain 2D, but they blend nicely with the 3D scenery.
Waven's worlds are based on a cubic design, but fine-tuned and without the grids that made the previous games dependent on it. This time everything looks more organic, readable, you can easily see where you stand without the need for a grid-based design.
As for the rest, Waven is set after season 3 of Wakfu and you can pick a character and customize it to your liking. There are companions from the Krosmoz universe waiting for your call, and the customizable Dimensional Havens. These are housing areas that you can expand, explore and you can even create your own dungeons to defend – this bit brought me some nice memories of Ubisoft's canceled The Mighty Quest For Loot.
The official Waven website is live and you can watch the teaser trailer below while we wait for a more detailed look.
